During paranormal investigations I use digital audio recorders to capture the voices of spirits. These spirit voices are called EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). The voices are not heard at the time of the investigation but appear on the recording when played back afterward. Most EVP are short - just a few words. Some actually answer questions asked aloud, others seem to be snatches of conversation and don't seem to have much meaning.

Child Counting to Three - This EVP was captured at an investigation I conducted at a private home in Westchester County, New York. During the investigation, I intuitively felt that the spirit of a little girl was in the house, even though the homeowner never reported seeing the ghost of a little girl. The message I received from her was that she never wanted to make herself known to the family. When I listened back to the recording, sure enough, there was the voice of a little girl counting to three. In this clip, I repeat the voice several times for clarity.
Cut it out! - I investigated a house in Connecticut that was haunted by several ghosts, and not all of them were pleasant. After the investigation I went back to the home and did a clearing. This clip was recorded during the clearing and it sounds like the voice of a boy saying "Cut it out". Apparently, the clearing was something this spirit wanted no part of.
In the back - Not all EVP are captured in houses. I recorded this example in a horse stable. It is an excellent example of an EVP that gives information that is verified later in the investigation. As I stood in the doorway of the stables I captured a whispery voice saying, "In the back". Immediately after, the owner of the stables can be heard telling me, "I often see the figure of a young man standing over there, in the back of the stables near the door." I learned later that the stables were built on the site of a former cottage where a young man had died of a drug overdose in the 1970s.
We're not dead - I recorded this clip at my home in Danbury CT. Sometimes spirits just want us to know that they are around, and that they don't consider themselves to be dead.
You Missed Me - I recorded this clip in my own home. I was using the voice recorder on my iPhone to record myself playing the piano. When I played it back, I could clearly hear a boy's voice say,"You missed me". My daughter was watching television, which you can hear in the background, but the boy's voice is definitely not coming from the TV. Interestingly, that day we had just gotten back from a week-long vacation which may account for the voice saying that I missed him.
Please Help Me - I recorded this clip during a clearing at a private residence in Westchester County NY. The investigation I conducted a week earlier with Synchronicity Paranormal uncovered several spirits in the home. Sometimes EVP comes through at a fast speed or, as in this case, a high pitch. The second version of the clip has the pitch adjusted slightly lower.
Leave That There -- This was recorded at the same investigation as the above. During the investigation we found a piece of old wallpaper in the middle of the bedroom floor. It had not been there when we entered the room, and neither of us could figure out where it came from. As we were leaving the room, a male voice was recorded saying, "Leave that there" - apparently meaning the piece of wallpaper.
Don't do that - This clip was recorded at my home in Danbury, CT. I was recording myself playing the piano, and I guess someone was not a fan!
Whistling -- I recorded this interesting clip at a private home in Brewster NY. Not all EVP are voices. In this case three evenly spaced whistles can be heard, as if someone were whistling a simple tune.
And We Would Like To Help Her -- This was recorded at a home in Ossining, New York. The female voice seems to indicate that she would like to help someone in the home, but it is not clear who it is referring to. The voice seems to have a slight Irish accent.
We Could Fix Him -- I recorded this clip at an investigation at a private home in Ossining, NY. The owner reported seeing a woman wearing purple colored clothing; he would feel his mattress being pushed up from underneath at night; and there were repeated occurrences of loud knocks on the wall near his bed at night. During the investigation I successfully "picked up" the name of a young woman who died of a drug overdose who I suspect was responsible for at least some of the activity. This EVP was captured in the home and seems to say "We could fix him".
Real Creepy -- I recorded this clip at an investigation conducted by Synchronicity Paranormal at a private home in Ridgefield, CT. The owners reported hearing the sound of heavy footsteps walking across the upstairs hallway at night; objects in the home were moved; the form of a man was seen in the kitchen; and there were areas of the house where guests felt extremely uneasy. When we were in the lower level of the house, at one point I said to my team 'I'm really creeped out down here, I don't know about you' and a spirit voice seems to say, "Real creepy" as if to mock me.
Talk to me -- I recorded this clip during the same Ridgefield, CT as above. This one features a male voice saying, "Talk to me".
I'm A Victim -- I recorded this clip at an investigation conducted by Synchronicity Paranormal at the same private home in Ridgefield CT as the above. Several spirit voices were recorded during the investigation. This one features a young boy saying, "I'm a victim"
Oh my gosh, a Buick! -- I recorded this clip at an investigation conducted by Katonah Paranormal at a private home in Ridgefield CT . The owners reported seeing a figure walking from a bedroom to an adjacent room. The EVP we captured sounds like an old man saying, "Oh my gosh, a Buick!". If you listen carefully, you can hear our team talking softly in the background. As with all of the EVP we capture, we did not hear the voice at the time we were recording. It was discovered on the recording during playback.
He calls him friend -- At an investigation conducted by Katonah Paranormal in Carmel NY, the owners complained of hearing heavy footsteps walking across the hallway on the second floor. On several occasions, all of their car windows were found open in the morning when they knew they had closed them the previous night. Their attic door was found pushed open one day. In this clip you can clearly hear a man saying, "He calls him friend".
How Old Do You Think I Am -- This was recorded at a cemetery in Brewster, New York. I'm not a big fan of recording in cemeteries, but this particular spot is very active and I've gotten several good EVP here. This male voice was recorded near a mausoleum from 1909.
Pearl -- This was recorded at my home in Danbury Connecticut.
Be Patient -- Recorded at a home in Ridgefield Connecticut where footsteps were heard every night, and where a man in a blue plaid shirt was seen.
Do Not Leave -- Recorded at a restaurant in Mount Kisco, New York. The recording was made during an investigation I conducted with Katonah Paranormal in a crawlspace in the kitchen area where workers were afraid to go. This is an example of a 'voice-over' EVP where the voice is speaking at the same time as my colleague Karen O'Donnell.
Yeah, we're fine -- This was recorded during an investigation I conducted with Katonah Paranormal at an apartment in Yonkers, New York. The renter reported hearing the sound of a party in her living room at night. The second she opened the door to investigate, the sound would stop. This voice responded to Kathy O'Donnell's question, "Do you guys come here to party?"
OK! -- This was recorded during my investigation of the Bronxville Public Library. At one point in the EVP session I said, "Jump in and talk whenever you want" and a male voice answers, "OK!"
I'm Here -- This was also recorded during my investigation of the Bronxville Public Library. At one point in the EVP session I asked the spirits to tap one of the sensors and it will show us that you're here. Immediately a faint voice says, "I'm here."
Don't Leave -- This chilling voice was recorded at a house where a family was under a demonic attack.
Douse the Lights/Answer Me -- This EVP was recorded at a farm house in New York state as outlined in the Case File, "The Farmhouse Haunting".
You Fall Down -- This EVP was recorded at a farm house in New York state as outlined in the Case File, "The Farmhouse Haunting".
Help Me -- This EVP was recorded at a farm house in New York state as outlined in the Case File, "The Farmhouse Haunting". I can also hear another voice saying, "Don't go" right after the "Help me" voice, but it's very faint.
Help ... He trapped me -- This EVP was recorded at a Psychologist's Office Suite in Connecticut.
Come Back (or "I'm back) -- This EVP was recorded at the same Psychologist's Office Suite in Connecticut as the above.
Elsy -- This EVP was recorded in Brooklyn, New York. You'll hear me picking up the intuitive information of the spirit's name, Elsy. 10 minutes later, the spirit says the same name, Elsy.
