The Value of Intuitive Information
If you’ve seen psychic mediums like John Edward, John Holland, or Theresa Caputo, you have a pretty good idea how they work. They pick up on intuitive information or messages from spirits, deliver it to a client or to an audience, then they look for confirmation before elaborating on the information or moving on to new impressions. Whether or not you are a fan of this type of spirit communication, it might be a good idea to consider the value of intuitive information when conducting paranormal investigations.
The Cambridge dictionary defines the word Intuitive as “able to know or understand something because of feelings rather than facts or proof.” I believe that we are all born intuitive and that we suppress this ability as we go through life by being told that these impressions are just our imagination. The only way to resurrect this ability is by beginning to pay attention to these feelings and, most importantly, to verbalize them without fear of ridicule.
Prior to conducting investigations I ‘reach out’ to see if I can pick up information that might prove helpful. Several years ago my paranormal team was invited to conduct an investigation on Long Island, New York. The night before, I lay down, relaxed and asked the question, “Is there some information I can be given that will help with tomorrow’s investigation?” – then I just waited calmly and paid attention to the images that came to me without judging or labeling them. After a while I got the strong impression of a closet that opened to reveal a stained-glass window comprised mostly out of yellow glass. I could see the yellow light from this window shining down on a hardwood floor, and standing in profile to the window was an old man with grey hair that stood up all over his head. He looked disturbed, frantic, and very afraid.
While this impression made absolutely no sense, I wrote it down and shared it with the homeowner the next day before she took us on a tour of the house. I said, “I don’t know if this means anything to you, but I’m seeing a stained glass window in a closet. The window is made out of mostly yellow glass.” I then went on to describe the man I had ‘seen’. She gave me a very odd look but didn’t say anything, and I immediately felt foolish. Obviously, this made no sense to her. After all, whoever heard of a stained glass window in a closet?
We made our way through the house, a beautiful old mansion that was being lovingly restored to its original condition. As we walked into the living room the homeowner turned to me and said, “Here is the living room, and here is your stained glass window in the closet.” She opened a closet door to reveal the exact window I had seen in my vision. She said that she was totally shocked when I mentioned the window, and that the man I had described was an exact description of a doctor who had committed suicide in the house at in the early 1930s.
Not all information is this dramatic. I pick up a variety of things such as names, physical sensations, and dates. Once I was sitting outside of a house waiting to begin an investigation and I had a strong impression of trains and the railroad. I didn’t know what it meant, but I was sure to mention it to the homeowner. He quickly brought me into a room where he kept historical information about the previous owners. He took out a photograph of a man in a railroad uniform from the early 1900’s. He told me that the original owner was ‘a big railroad man’.
Am I right all of the time? Of course not! But I never hold back my impressions. Why? Because by verbalizing them and getting feedback, I am learning to distinguish between an authentic intuitive impression and a random thought. The difference between the two is subtle, but there is a difference. I always reveal the information to my clients with the preamble, “I don’t know if this means anything to you …”. I’m not simply covering myself by phrasing it this way. I really don’t know if the information will mean anything! I’ve revealed information that was meaningless to a client at the time, but who later contacted me to verify it. Other times the information remains a mystery.
When conducting paranormal investigations we all hope to record the next perfect class A EVP, or to photograph a full body apparition. But what we feel on an investigation is far more valuable. Doing a walk-through of a house and pointing out areas that you feel hot, cold, or sick, or that you keep getting a person’s name or a date is the most important part of the investigation. You may never get that EVP. The EMF meter may not register anything unusual while you are there. You might not get a single interesting photo. But your impressions are gold. They reveal the possible ‘who, what, where, when, why and how’ of a haunting. So don’t hold back. Over time you’ll get better and better at picking up pertinent information that will take your paranormal investigations in a whole new direction.

Things That Go Bump in the Night
“From ghoulies and ghosties
And long-leggedy beasties
And things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord deliver us.” ~ Traditional Scottish Prayer
The most commonly reported activity in a haunted house is that of mysterious sounds. These include muffled conversations, music, whistling, banging, coughing, crying – you name it! But by far, the most commonly reported paranormal activity is the sound of phantom footsteps. But from where do these inexplicable sounds originate? Are they actual sounds? Are they the impression of sounds that are picked up intuitively by the person having the experience? Or, are they simply echoes from the past?
The majority of sounds heard in a haunted house are residual – sounds that originate in the past and are intruding upon the present. A good example of this comes from an investigation I conducted where a family reported hearing the sound of their front door opening and closing, followed by noisy footsteps coming up the stairs. This series of sounds was a common occurrence in the house, and always followed a predictable path. Even when family members were near the front door, they never actually saw the door open – they just heard the sound of the door opening and closing followed by the footsteps. These sounds, then, originated in the past and were playing over and over again in the present.
Another example of sounds seeming to originate from another time period comes from an investigation I helped conduct several years ago. A family reported a number of strange occurrences in their home, but the most compelling was the sound of footsteps. It sounded as if someone wearing heavy boots was walking across a wooden floor, and as the family sat listening in the living room downstairs they could actually follow the path of these footsteps going back and forth across the upstairs hallway. There’s just one problem – the hallway was carpeted! Obviously the sounds they were hearing were not those made by something walking back and forth across their carpeted hallway. It was as if they were hearing footsteps from another time and place walking across a wooden floor – sounds from the past intruding upon the present. In this case, the house had been built near the site of an older house that had been torn down. The sounds they were hearing were most likely from that previous home.
In some cases, it’s not clear if sounds are actually occurring in the house, or if they are sounds from another time period. One family contacted me with a report of the sound of footsteps heard every night starting at 8 PM and lasting until 11 PM. These footsteps were heard walking back and forth across an upstairs hallway while the homeowners sat downstairs huddled on a couch listening, and waiting for them to stop. Without more physical evidence, there is no way of knowing where the sounds were coming from. If the family heard the footsteps, then investigated to find the imprint of shoes or bare feet on the floor, then we might conclude that the sound was not coming from the past but were created in the present.
Whatever the source, the sounds heard in haunted houses are evidence that some type of paranormal activity is occurring. Whether they are originate from the past or the present is less important than the fact that they are sounds of the spirit world making itself known to the living.

Bigfoot Sightings in Connecticut and New York
I recently received a curious email. The person contacted me after one of my Connecticut Ghost Hunter business cards fell out of a book he was reading about hauntings in Connecticut. I have no idea how the card got there, but am thankful that it did! The email read:
I see that you investigate paranormal activities around Connecticut/New York, and was wondering if you have ever come across recent Sasquatch/Dogman sightings up in the Litchfield hills area? Thanks so much, and all the best - Jay
I wrote back that I had heard rumors of Bigfoot sightings in Connecticut, but I have never been contacted by anyone who has actually seen one. I asked if he had ever seen a Bigfoot, and his answer really piqued my interest.
I have had contact/sightings with The Sasquatch people, but I am not at liberty to disclose where I've had them, for the simple reason I respect their forest home, and do not want "BF hunters" or "researchers" trying to track them down. This is by no means directed at you, just in general to the folks who have a specific agenda of disrupting things.
After receiving Jay’s emails I did some research and discovered that although Bigfoot are primarily thought of as a Pacific Northwest phenomenon, sightings have been reported all over the United State including New York and Connecticut. The deeper I dug, the more interested I became. I learned that Bigfoot sightings go all the way back to Native Americans lore.
Many Native American tribes have legends of a Bigfoot-like creature, and each tribe has a different name for it. The Hairy Man, Big Elder Brother, The Night People, Big Spirit Being, The Wood Man, and of course Sasquatch. To indigenous people, Bigfoot is considered to be a spiritual or inter-dimensional being who can enter or leave our physical dimension as they please. To sight a Bigfoot indicates that man has somehow upset the harmony and balance of existence.
The following are just a few of the many reports of Bigfoot sightings that I came across in the Connecticut and New York area. If you’re interested in the subject and want to learn more, drop me an email and I can steer you to some good resources. Better yet, if you’ve ever had an encounter with a Bigfoot or any other strange creature, I’d love to hear about it!
Connecticut Sightings
Accounts of Bigfoot-like creatures in the Connecticut area have been around for ages. In 1895, reports of “The Wild Man” began hitting the papers. The sightings took place in Colebrook, Connecticut. According to one newspaper article of the time, the town selectman, Riley Smith, reported seeing a “large man, stark naked, and covered with hair all over his body” running out of a clump of bushes. He described it as “a wild, hairy man of the woods, six foot in height … the man’s hair was black and hung down long on his shoulders, and his body was thickly covered with black hair.”
In the weeks that followed, word of the Wildman spread. A reward was offered for its capture and a search party of more than 100 armed men was dispatched. But in spite of the thorough search, the Wildman eluded capture. In the ensuing weeks, reports of Wildman sightings lessened, then stopped altogether. Was Connecticut’s Wild Man just an eccentric, harmless hermit who lived naked in the woods, or was it an early Bigfoot sighting?
Decades later, reports of an elusive, hairy creature resurfaced in 1972. One sighting took place in Winchester, Connecticut, just seven miles from the Wild Man sightings. The Hartford Courant reported that two men observed “a strange, man-like creature” on Winchester Road near Crystal Lake Reservoir. They described it as an upright hominid “about eight feet tall and covered with hair’. The creature eventually disappeared into the woods. When it was suggested that the men might have seen a bear, they replied, “This was not a bear.”
In 1974, a similar creature was spotted near Rugg Brook Reservoir in Winchester, Connecticut, just a few miles from Crystal Lake Reservoir. One night, two couples were parked by the reservoir when they spotted in the moonlight what they described as a “six-foot, 300-pound creature covered with dark-colored hair”. Because they were so terrified, they quickly drove off and notified the police. A search of the area failed to turn up any evidence.
In 2007 a man from the northwestern part of Connecticut claims he saw a Bigfoot in an open field at the top of a hill. The 26 year old man, Derek, was scanning the field for deer when he spotted the creature 150 yards from where he stood. The beast looked right at him, and he estimated the animal’s height at around 6 feet 5 inches.
Derek reported, “Its skin looked black and leathery. I would say it was a pretty even mix between a gorilla and a person,” he recalled. “It had a broader chest and more of a narrow waist. It was lanky, it was actually a little more lanky at the bottom and kind of bulky at the top.”
It must have seen me come up over the hill and I remember that was the thing that actually scared me the most; it was having something looking right at me. There is no question that it knew I was there.” The creature suddenly turned and walked into the woods.
Not all of the Connecticut Bigfoot sightings occur in the wild. In 2009 a woman reported seeing a strange creature outside of her home in Windham County, Connecticut. It was 2 AM and the woman couldn’t sleep, so she decided to go downstairs to the kitchen for a glass of milk. She turned on the overhead kitchen light, then turned and got the milk from the refrigerator. As she turned around she glanced at the back window and saw two red, golf ball sized eyes staring at her from the rear kitchen window. She described the eyes as being set farther apart than human eyes, with possible light grey skin under each eye. She maintained eye contact with the creature which she estimated to be 7 feet tall for approximately 5-6 seconds before ducking down behind an island counter between her and the kitchen window.
Once she was sure the creature had left, she turned on the back and front yard spotlights, but she couldn’t see anything. The next morning she inspected the area in front of the rear kitchen window where the animal had been standing and noticed two foot-like impressions in the soil immediately beneath the kitchen window.
New York Sightings
Connecticut is a relatively small state, and I wondered if neighboring New York state had any sightings. In 2012 the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) said that there had been over 100 sightings in New York State. Even if you have just a passing interest in the subject of Bigfoot or cryptozoology, I highly recommend the BRFO website (http://www.bfro.net/) which is organized by state and county. The following eyewitness accounts of Bigfoot sightings come from their website.
In the Autumn of 1992, a motorist in Warren County, New York had a stand-off with a strange creature that came out of the woods early one morning. The witness stated, “It was about 6 AM and I was on my way to work when something came from the right side of the road, out of the woods, and forced me to stop or run into it. It is dark that time of morning so it took a few seconds to get my thoughts together. When I did I couldn't believe what I was seeing. "IT" was somewhere between 7-8 feet tall (at least) with white or light gray hair from head to toe. "IT" was standing 10-12 feet in front of my car directly in the headlights so I had a perfect view. The creature was standing facing the left side of the road with a slight left twist to it's body in my direction. We stared at each other for what seemed to be minutes but I can't say for sure how long it actually was. I had absolutely no fear of this creature, it seemed to have a sad demeanor. This creature made no sound at all. I do not have any reason to believe it was either male or female. Needless to say I have carried my camera every since but I believe that it was a once in a lifetime incident.”
Another sighting in Warren County cook place on the shores of Lake George, New York in the Spring of 1990. After reading the witnesses description of the creature and seeing the drawing he submitted, I’d say that it wasn’t exactly a Bigfoot, but rather some other mysterious creature.
According to the eyewitness, “My brother and I were canoeing on Lake George, in N.Y state at about sunset. We headed south for 10 minutes to an area known as Deer Leap. At lakeside is a boulder strewn area with cliffs rising 600 feet above the shoreline. As we were beginning to come on to this area we saw something standing on shore. It was brownish in color and standing straight up with it's arms at it's side. It was about the size of a small man and very thin.”
In a follow-up interview, the witness described the animal as being about five feet tall and extremely skinny, like "a teenaged boy." It appeared to be covered with reddish brown hair and had a pale face, expressive eyes and mouth, and a "deranged" smile or smirk on its face. Unlike a bear, it's arms were long and it lacked a pronounced snout.
"Its body was facing south, looking down the shoreline when it suddenly turned its head directly towards us and looked very intently. We whispered to each other and watched it while it watched us. We were 2 grown men paddling parallel to the shore and about 200 feet out but we could not summon up the courage to go in closer.
This thing had a strange look, almost a crazed grin. It looked almost like a giant Lemur. The sun was set now as we continued to watch it in the shadows of the mountain. As it was standing next to an old, dead pine tree, it turned and climbed, sloth-like up the tree about 20 feet to the first and only large limb and onto the crook of a branch. We paddled back around and as we approached it again it cocked its head directly at us, after a minute or so it turned its face downward into its body and became as if it were a part of the tree. Just a lump on the crook of the branch. You would never have know that it was there unless you saw it move. I have been in this area all my life and have never seen anything like this and have not seen it since”
The witness submitted this eerie sketch with his report.

The following report comes from Whitehall, New York near the Vermont state line. The sighting took place in January of 1989 by a man named Robert Townsend during a stay at a friend’s house.
Mr. Townsend and his friend were walking in the woods when they noticed strange tracks in the snow. “My friend and I saw footprints while walking in the woods that must have been 20 inches long, and we also found some tree branches broken down. They were originally about 15 feet off of the ground. We decided to head back to his house right away because we both felt as if we were being watched and it was close to dark.
The entire way home we felt as if we were being followed. I slept on a fold out couch in the living room and the entire front of the house has windows. The next morning I awoke to see a large creature about 20 feet from the house. (The creature) must have been at least 10 feet tall, as the windows are 15 feet off the ground and it was no more than 5 feet below me.
I watched it wandered around for a while, and I did not dare move. It was brown and looked very human except for its size and forehead, and obviously the hair. After about five minutes it walked toward the house and up a bank. As it passed the house it banged on the wall and I thought that it's arm would come right through. My friend was wakened by this and came in and I told him what I had seen.We decided not to go back out to follow the tracks."
The handful of stories shared here are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Bigfoot and other cryptozoological sightings in Connecticut and New York. Of course, skeptics argue that by now there should be an abundance of physical evidence. In addition, now that nearly everyone on the planet has a smartphone, there should be no shortage of photo and video evidence. And with all of the Bigfoot hunters out there, both on TV and in the private sector, surely someone should have caught one by now.
In addressing these points I’d like to go back to the original email I received that started this journey for me. After the writer discovered that I had not been contacted by any other Bigfoot eyewitnesses, he emailed me one last time. At the very end of his message he said something that stuck with me, and because it has been kicking around in my head ever since I think there may be some truth to it. He wrote:
"I was just wondering if you ever came across other individuals who have had encounters in the past. I am always interested in hearing other people’s stories when it comes to The Sasquatch. I will say this much, they are a highly evolved race of ‘people’ who put us humans to shame with their ability to shape shift, teleport and communicate using telepathy. The reason no one has ever captured them is because they know way in advance a person's intention through energy vibrations and auric fields."
Food for thought!
